Effective Program Packages

The Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Program Archive (YSAPPA) was created by Sociometrics under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Drug Abuse with the goal of identifying, disseminating and replicating empirically-supported Substance Abuse Prevention Programs aimed at youth. Programs in the archive were selected by a national advisory panel of leading scientists in the field of substance abuse prevention. Sociometrics is pleased to offer the following programs packages to prevention professionals. The packages are available singly or as a collection.

ABAN AYA (Flay, Graumlich, & the ABAN AYA Team)

ABAN AYA was developed to address multiple problem behaviors such as violence, substance abuse, delinquency and sexual activity, simultaneously in a long-term intervention specifically for African American youths in grades five through eight. Note: This program is available as part of the PASHA collection.

ALCOHOL SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM (Marlatt, Baer, Fromme, Larimer, Williams, and Kivlahan)

The ASTP is designed for young people who have experienced negative consequences of alcohol use.

PROJECT TOWARDS NO TOBACCO USE (PROJECT TNT) (Sussman, Dent, Stacy, Craig, and Burton)

Project TNT is is a classroom based program designed to target the primary causes of cigarette smoking, smokeless tobacco use, and cigar and pipe smoking among youths in grades five through nine.

TOBACCO POLICY OPTIONS FOR PREVENTION (TPOP) (Forster)

Tobacco Policy Options for Prevention (TPOP) is a community-based intervention aimed at changing community tobacco policies and practices and evaluating their effects on youths' access to tobacco and tobacco use.

PROJECT SHOUT (Elder)

Project SHOUT is a five-year tobacco-use prevention program suitable for use with fifth through ninth grade students.

LIFE SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM: (Botvin, Eng, and Williams)

This is a three year tobacco, alcohol, and drug abuse (mainly marijuana) prevention program for middle or junior high school students.

KNOW YOUR BODY SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM (Wynder, Walter, and Vaughan)

Know Your Body (KYB) is a skills-based, teacher-delivered comprehensive health-promotion program for grades K-6.

STATE-WIDE INDIAN DRUG PREVENTION PROGRAM (Schinke)

This is a drug prevention program to prevent substance abuse in fourth and fifth grade Native American/Alaskan Native youth.

PROJECTS TOWARDS NO DRUG ABUSE (PROJECT TND) (Sussman, Craig, and Moss)

Project TND is a highly interactive program designed to help high school youth (14 to 19 years old) resist substance use.

PROJECT ALERT (Ellickson, Robert, Harrison, and McGuigan)

Project ALERT is a school-based drug prevention curriculum for middle school students.

POSITIVE ACTION (Allred)

The Positive Action program is an integrated, comprehensive, coherent program for urban, suburban, and rural schools, families, and communities. It includes a K-12 curriculum for all students, including minority and special needs students, a school climate program, a family curriculum and parent involvement program, a community involvement program, and an after-school program.

RESIDENTIAL STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (RSAP): (Morehouse)

The RSAP program is a 5-year demonstration project in Westchester County, New York, that has dramatically reduced substance use among institutionalized adolescents at risk. RSAP is uniquely designed to address the needs of seriously troubled 14-17-year-olds.

ATHLETES TRAINING AND LEARNING TO AVOID STEROIDS (ATLAS) (Goldberg and Elliot)

ATLAS is a drug prevention and health promotion program designed for male athletes in grades 9 through 12.

YSAPPA program packages include a complete set of program materials (such as Instructors Manuals, Workbooks, Videos, Student Exercise Books etc.); a multimedia CD-ROM prepared by archive staff that provides easy to follow, step by step guidelines for implementing and evaluating the program; an evaluation packet for reassessing the effectiveness of the program in a new site; and a User's Guide that describes the program, its development and original evaluation.
