How can I open a PC zipped file?

Most datafiles are compressed in zipped (.ZIP) or executable (.EXE) format.

If a user downloads the ZIP (PC) version of a dataset, software such as WINZIP or PKUNZIP (Windows) Stuffit Expander or Zipit (Macintosh) may be used.

Executable (self-extracting) files are opened by clicking or double-clicking on the filename AFTER it has been downloaded to the user's hard drive. The executable version of a downloadable dataset file is not an application, it is simply a file that will extract the file contents of the EXE file. The contents of a ZIP and an EXE file are identical.
