Since injuries are a leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults, and one of the most expensive health problems to society, the National Pediatric Trauma Registry (NPTR) was formed to study the etiology of pediatric trauma and its consequences. Centered at Tufts-New England Medical Center, and endorsed by the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the registry is ongoing and currently funded by the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) through December, 1997.
The NPTR data archived here represent 45,333 children under age 19. Subjects were continuously registered through 66 Pediatric Trauma Centers or Children's Hospitals with Pediatric Trauma Units from October 1988 to December 1994. Trauma Centers voluntarily participated in the registry. All admitted youth and DOA's from any injury, except burning, poisoning or near drowning were registered.
The National Pediatric Trauma Registry has a unique focus on the functional status of surviving children discharged from acute care. For example, nine specific domains of individual functioning are measured and included in this data set. These domains include vision, hearing, speech, self-feeding, bathing, dressing, walking, cognition, and behavior. Moreover, 267 variables capture the duration and sequencing of children's experience with trauma, trauma severity, treatment and treatment outcomes.
