SAFER
CHOICES: A High-School Based Program to Prevent STDs, HIV and Pregnancy SAFER CHOICES is a comprehensive intervention to reduce the number of high
school students engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse. The program is designed
for ninth and tenth graders, with 10 classroom lessons presented each year.
The randomized trial involved 20 high schools. The evaluation revealed that
the intervention reduced the frequency of sex without a condom (p = .02), reduced
the number of sexual partners in the last three months with whom a condom was
not used (p = .04), and increased condom use during last sex among those who
had sex in the last three months (p = .02).
