I have an international family consisting of two Filipino parents, seven siblings, and 12 nieces and nephews, as well as an American husband and two daughters. Together, we are starting the JCAP Fund to provide four-year college scholarships and expense money for Philippine public high school graduates who graduate from high school in the top 5% of their class. JCAP scholarships will cover tuition, books, and incidental expenses such as lab fees and transportation to and from school. Tuition is expected to average $1,000 (P55,000) per scholar-year. Books and other school-related expenses are expected to average $200 (P11,000). The scholarships will not cover board & lodging; therefore, it is expected that most JCAP scholars will continue to live at home. Given this constraint, JCAP Scholars will be free to attend any Philippine college or university of their choice that accepts them using standard admission procedures.

JCAP stands for Jayme-Card-Ayala-Pathways. Jayme and Card are family names. Our role will be to raise funds for endowment of these scholarships. Pathways and Ayala are established Philippine-based organizations that will partner with us in ensuring the program’s success. Established four years ago by a grant from the Ford Foundation, Pathways (go to the Pathways/Ateneo de Manila University web site; read the Pathways blog; view an article about Pathways; read about a Pathways participant; view another participant's story; read about a Pathways volunteer) will make sure that JCAP scholarships are awarded in a fair manner; that JCAP scholars are nurtured and mentored from their high school junior year through their college graduation; and that parents and families of JCAP scholars are given opportunities to make a livelihood. The Ayala Foundation (www.ayalafoundation.org in the Philippines and www.af-usa.org in the US) and the Ayala Family of Companies (www.ayala.com.ph) will manage the JCAP funds and provide JCAP scholars with internship opportunities in the summer of their junior year and with post- graduation job possibilities.

Our parents were not rich. They sacrificed a lot to send their eight children to college. My husband himself was a scholar who could not have attended college were it not for the generosity of a kind benefactor. Our lives are better for the sacrifice and generosity of those who came before us. We know you feel the same way about your parents and others who paved the way for your success. Let us all “pay it forward” by giving future generations of talented but needy Filipinos educational opportunities similar to the ones we were blessed with. It is said that a good education opens the doors to a brighter future. We deeply believe this and hope that you do as well.

SOCIOMETRICS Corporation, a social science research firm in Los Altos, California, has made JCAP Scholarships the main beneficiary of its Giving Program. Sociometrics believes in giving back to the local, national, and international communities that it serves. The company is the primary driving force behind the birth of JCAP and remains firmly committed to its growth and success, donating monthly an amount able to cover one-scholar-year. We hope that other companies will follow suit.

Become a donor. If you are based in the Philippines you can help by making a one-time donation of any amount or a monthly donation of 200, 500, or 1000 pesos to the JCAP Fund (https://www.socio.com/web2/jcap/jcapdonatephil.htm). If you are based in the USA you can help by making a one-time donation of any amount or a monthly MasterCard or Visa credit card donation of $20, $50, or $100 to the JCAP Fund (https://www.socio.com/web2/jcap/jcapdonateus.htm). Donations will be processed through myayala.com, which is the name that will appear on your credit card statement.

Become a champion. If you would like to help raise money for this Fund by circulating this email to your class listserve, please do so. Or, download the JCAP flyer and post it or pass it along to your classmates or colleagues. Let me know that you are doing so (by emailing jjcard@socio.com) so that you can be acknowledged as a JCAP champion.

Become a mentor. If you are based in the Philippines and can donate time mentoring JCAP scholars with their schoolwork or helping them find jobs, let me know (by emailing jjcard@socio.com) and I will ask Pathways to add your name to their mentor database

Pathways estimates that it will cost, on average, $1,200 (P66,000) per year to cover one scholar’s tuition, books, lab fees, and transportation money to and from school. This means that a one-time donation of $5,000 or more or a four-year monthly pledge of $100 (P5,500) or more will allow you to Adopt-a-Scholar for his/her entire college career and enter JCAP's Golden Circle of Donors.

Our exclusive Golden Circle of Donors is specially reserved for persons or institutions that have donated funds to cover the educational expenses of one or more JCAP scholars for the entire duration of their college courses.

When you join our Golden Circle of Donors, we can name a scholarship after you or a name of your choice (your parents or your company), if you so decide. If you agree, we can also mention your name prominently on our website and all our communication materials as an honored member of our Golden Circle of Donors.

Here are fun and “painless” ways to come up with that small but all-important “help money” for JCAP scholars.

  1. Brown Bag Lunch. Bring a homemade brown bag lunch to work once a week and donate your lunch money for that day to JCAP.
  2. Popcorn Night at Home. Rent a movie for the night and donate your monthly movie ticket money to JCAP.
  3. Garage Sale for JCAP. Sell stuff from your closets and garage and donate proceeds to JCAP.
  4. Books for Books. Your books can buy books for a JCAP scholar. Sell your used books and donate the money for a JCAP’ scholar’s textbooks for college.

We are all in this together so please help by spreading the word to reach these goals. Forward this message via email to your class, family, or work listserv. We will have a JCAP donor and champion party, should the goals be met: one party in the Philippines for Philippine donors, champions, and mentors; another in the US for US donors and champions. We will invite the first batch of JCAP scholars to the Philippine party. It will also be rewarding to watch the countdown together. Therefore, if you provide your email address on the attached donor form, Ayala Foundation will provide you with a semiannual progress report on how close we are to meeting our fundraising goals. The emailed semiannual report will also include information on who the JCAP Scholars are and how well they are doing (hopefully with a couple of video clips), so you get to see up close the good to which your money is being put.

Thank you and may you be rewarded for your generosity in this life or the next!
