RESOURCES FOR PRACTITIONERS

Building Culturally Competent Programs
Cultural Competence Toolkits are web-based HIV prevention program planning, implementation, and evaluation resources designed to provide research-based, practitioner-friendly guidelines, worksheets, case studies and other resource that help service providers conduct culturally competent HIV prevention program planning, implementation, and evaluation.

Risk Assessment & Learning Activities
Know the Risks is a computer-based HIV/AIDS Information and Personal Risk Assessment Center designed for use by patients/clients and their health providers in diverse clinic and community settings. The tool consists of two parts: 1) A computerized personal HIV/AIDS risk assessment survey and 2) an HIV/AIDS prevention learning center. Content is available in both English and Spanish.

Science-Based Information Modules
The PETRA Information Modules include research-based information about HIV/AIDS incidence, prevalence, antecedents, consequences, prevention, and treatment for anyone interested in learning more about HIV/AIDS.

Effective Prevention Programs

Replication Kits for Effective Programs
Replication Kits for Effective Programs are a Sociometrics' research-to-practice initiative aimed at assembling in one place—for public dissemination, distribution, and replication—outstanding prevention programs in key health areas. Programs were selected for archive inclusion based on their demonstrated salutory effect on risk-taking behaviors. These program archives have been designed to: facilitate cost-effective replication of prevention programs that work, eliminate wasted effort spent “reinventing the wheel” and encourage ongoing scientific evaluation to ascertain the robustness of each program's effectiveness (or lack thereof) across different study populations.

Publications
Case Studies in Effective AIDS Prevention

This book contains concise summaries of 18 adult-oriented HIV/AIDS prevention programs with strong evidence of effectiveness in changing sex- and drug-related risk behaviors important to the transmission of HIV. Each summary presents the history, theoretical framework and structure of an effective HIV/AIDS prevention program, together with an account of the evaluation procedure and results, in language that is accessible to students, prevention practitioners and researchers alike.

Program Evaluation

Instruments
HAPPA Evaluation Assistance Kit (HEAK)
The HEAK is a comprehensive questionnaire item bank that can be customized for use with any adult HIV/AIDS prevention program. The HEAK was developed to measure attitudes, knowledge, and risk behaviors associated with HIV/AIDS. Virtually all questions in the item bank were drawn from national surveys studying HIV knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. Individual items from the HAPPA Kit can be culled into a smaller version of an evaluation for increased usability.

Prevention Minimum Evaluation Data Set (PMEDS)
This publication provides a core Primary Questionnaire, with optional Supplementary Modules, that can be used for evaluating all teen pregnancy and teen STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programs.

Prevention Minimum Evaluation Data Set Jr. (PMEDS Jr).
This publication provides a short ready-to-use questionnaire for use in evaluating teen pregnancy STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programs that emphasize abstinence. Because of its focus on attitudes, intentions and skills, PMEDS Jr may also be suitable for evaluating programs aimed at younger teens.

Prevention Minimum Evaluation Data Set Jr. +
This publication, modeled after PMEDS, provides a core Primary Questionnaire, with optional Supplementary Modules that can be used for evaluating all teen pregnancy and teen STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programs. PMEDS Jr+ is considerably shorter than PMEDS, making it easier for local programs to select questions and develop a survey.

Publications
Local Evaluator Consultant Network Directory
The Local Evaluator Consultant Network Directory comprises a relatively short list of experts who can serve as evaluation consultants to local teen STD/HIV/AIDS prevention programs. The consultant list is organized alphabetically, first by state, then —within each state— by consultants last name. Listings include each consultants affiliation, work address, work telephone number and email address unless otherwise requested by the consultant.

Online Evaluation
Virtual Program Evaluation Consultant
Virtual Program Evaluation Consultant is an online survey creation, data collection and analysis tool, designed to help practitioners, social workers and health professionals evaluate their small and large-scale HIV/AIDS prevention programs. The survey creation section contains ready-to-use surveys as well as a wide selection of valid and reliable measures for determining program outcomes. The survey can be administered online in English or Spanish including an audio feature.

Data and Internet Training Resources
Comprised of a set of six self-paced information modules and a parallel set of teaching materials for instructors, the Data and Internet Literacy Series covers just about everything you need to know about utilizing data and the Internet to understand issues and optimize your research in the social sciences.
