The HIV/AIDS Prevention Program Archive (HAPPA)Established in 1997 with support from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program Archive (HAPPA) is a resource aimed at assisting prevention practitioners around the country by: (1) identifying and facilitating access to effective HIV/AIDS adult prevention programs, and (2) encouraging rigorous reevaluation of these programs. (Also see HIV/AIDS/STD prevention programs for teens).
HAPPA Publication Case Studies in Effective Aids Prevention (Alternate title: HIV/AIDS Effective Prevention Reader) This book contains concise summaries of 18 adult-oriented HIV/AIDS prevention programs with strong evidence of effectiveness in changing sex- and drug-related risk behaviors important to the transmission of HIV. OverviewIn 1997, HAPPA staff began the process of identifying promising behavioral prevention programs within the HIV/AIDS research literature and the professional community. This exhaustive search led to the identification of 32 programs which demonstrated substantive relevance to the goal of preventing HIV/AIDS and employed rigorous evaluation methodologies to reveal positive behavioral impact on at least one or more sexual and/or drug-related risk factors. This initial list was sent to a Scientist Expert Advisory Panel which reviewed all the programs and the evidence for their effectiveness as summarized by HAPPA staff and described in published journal articles and book chapters and assigned scores to each ranging from lowest to highest priority on a ten point scale. Programs which scored in the 7 to 10 point range were identified for inclusion in HAPPA. Click here for a complete description of the selection criteria. Sociometrics successfully acquired 11 of the 18 identified effective programs for inclusion in the archive (of the remaining programs, all but one are available from the original developers). Sociometrics then began the task of packaging the programs in attractive and engaging boxes containing everything needed to replicate the promising program or adapt its implementation protocols in accordance with the needs of a particular population. A twelfth package, WILLOW, was added to the collection in 2006. HAPPA Program Packages Include:
