Data and Internet Literacy Series (DIL Series)

The Data and Internet Literacy Series (DIL Series) was created with the goal of training data and internet novices on the appropriate use of these valuable resources.

Comprised of a set of six self-paced training modules and a parallel set of teaching materials for instructors, the Data and Internet Literacy Series covers just about everything you need to know about utilizing data and the Internet to understand issues and optimize your research in the social sciences.

The Data and Internet Literacy Training Modules are user-friendly self-paced guides to gaining usable skills for utilizing and understanding data and the Internet in the context of social science research. Each module has its own glossary to further define terms and concepts introduced in the module. Each module also comes with a set of activities to explore and apply data and Internet knowledge and skills. These activities encourage application of module concepts, review important terms, and stimulate critical thinking. The Training Modules can be purchased individually or as a collection.

The Data and Internet Literacy Instructor Packages provide materials for teaching the content of Data and Internet Training Modules in a classroom setting. In addition to a complete copy of Training Module materials, an Instructor Package includes a lesson plan, a set of PowerPoint® slides, review questions and answers, and photocopy masters of the module activities and review questions. The Instructor Packages can be purchased individually or as a collection.

Training Module #1: Making Sense of Scientific Articles - This module empowers data novices to review the scientific literature and extract needed information from journal articles.
Training Module #2: All About Data Collection - This module teaches data novices the ins and outs of gathering evidence to support an idea or argument. It walks readers through the process of seeking out existing data, and empowers them to collect a bit of data themselves.
Training Module #3: Understanding Data in Numbers, Words, and Pictures - This module offers a general introduction to the concepts of data interpretation, and can serve as a stepping-stone for future lessons in data analysis.
Training Module #4: Using the Internet to Find the Information You Need - This module offers a general training in utilizing the Internet effectively and efficiently to find the information you need.
Training Module #5: How to Give Your Organization an On-line Presence - This module is designed to help those unfamiliar with web development create a basic web site for themselves, their organization or business.
Training Module #6: Using Your Internet and Data Skills to Achieve Fundraising Goals - This module will help you to integrate and apply your data and Internet literacy skills to your fundraising efforts.
