1987-1988 Alan Guttmacher Institute Survey of Reasons
Women Choose Abortion
Investigators:
A sample of 30 abortion facilities yielded a sample of 1,900 patients, who completed a self-administered questionnaire about their reasons for having an abortion, and their reasons for delaying their abortion until the second trimester if they did so. The survey was conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute from November 1987 through March 1988. Abortion facilities were selected for the survey if they performed at least 400 abortions in 1985 (a population that accounts for 90 percent of all abortions), and were primarily, but not exclusively, nonhospital facilities. The Data Set includes 265 variables.
