HIV/AIDS and STD Data Archive
The HIV/AIDS/STD Data Archive, funded by the National Institute of Mental
Health and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development
(NICHD), includes studies that provide descriptive and comparative
data on the behavioral and social antecedents and consequences of HIV,
AIDS, and sexually transmitted diseases. Studies address a variety
of topics including:
- the incidence and prevalence of specific sexual
behaviors (including abstinence, vaginal and anal intercourse, oral-genital
sexual activity, masturbation);
- contraceptive and STD-preventive behavior;
- attitudes and beliefs regarding
sexual behavior and methods of contraception and STD prophylaxis;
- AIDS/HIV
knowledge, attitudes, behavior, and serostatus;
- current and past episodes
of gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia, and other STDs;
- and high-risk behavior,
including alcohol/drug use and prostitution.
All studies in the archive have been selected by a panel of scientist experts in the field of
HIV/AIDS research.
The purpose of the collection is to provide access to the best data
sets on the prevalence, incidence, correlates, and consequences of HIV/AIDS
in the U.S. These valuable data resources facilitate progress towards
the HIV/AIDS-related prevention and control objectives of Healthy People
2010, encourage secondary analysis of the best existing data, thereby
adding to our base of knowledge and increasing the scientific yield from
the investment in research.
